The BAPG presents...

Geophysics - Examples of how, when, and where to apply Them

Come join us for interesting project examples of geophysical applications and what type of project situations benefit from them.

Speaker: Benjamin King-Smith P.G., Project Geologist, Geosyntec

Background/Objectives

A review of four common geophysical methods and project situations where they best apply. A review of the theories of ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, and seismic Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) methods. The presentation includes 5 project examples in which the geophysical methods significantly contributed to the client and stakeholder objectives beyond conventional destructive methods.

Approach/Activities

The approach is to review the physical and technical limitations of each of the four outlined geophysical methods. Each method is introduced by defining the geophysical, resolution, and depth limitations, access/safety considerations, common project applications, and then pulled together in a project example. The project situations range from UST surveys, large scale unknown utility mapping in an industrial setting, dredge disposal facilities, geohazards, and complex bedrock assessment for tunnel design.

Results/Lessons Learned

The results and lessons learned will demonstrate the project situations where geophysical investigation methods would be beneficial over destructive subsurface methods. An evaluation will be discussed regarding four common geophysical methods such as ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, and seismic survey limitations and case study applications. Additional de-risking to project design in combining multiple geophysical methods to resolve data gaps.

Important Information & Reminders -

Did you know that the cost is the largest barrier preventing students from attending BAPG meetings? Please consider sponsoring a student's attendance during registration. This gesture can have a long-lasting impact by supporting students beyond the current meeting. The final headcount for attendance is due the Monday (10/19) before the presentation.
