Revitalization of the Former Bethlehem Steel Site

(and Part 375 Regulatory Update)

Presented by Stanley Radon, P.G.

NYSDEC Regional Geologist

After many decades of decline, the former Bethlehem Steel site in Lackawanna is undergoing a significant transformation.  Remediation under New York State's Brownfield and Superfund/RCRA programs are supporting economic development and future public access to the waterfront for the first time in over 120 years! This is a large and geologically complicated site that includes approximately 500 acres of man-made land created by dumping slag, up to 90+ feet in thickness, into Lake Erie.  This presentation will discuss the unique history of the site, prior/future remediation, brownfield development projects including several renewable energy projects, a Smokes Creek Basin study, and early plans for a public access area.

Approval for one Professional Development Hour for licensed professionals is pending!
