ABSTRACT

McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, P.C. (MMCE) was involved in the planning, design and construction phases of a project for a planned medical office building located on the Buffalo

Medical Campus. The building was unique in that it required the cost effective design and construction of a two level below ground parking facility. MMCE provided geotechnical services

including managing subsurface explorations, providing foundation recommendations, designing a temporary shoring system which would become the permanent basement wall and providing

design support throughout construction.

Mr. Nichols will provide a brief overview of the project and the geotechnical and geological conditions encountered at the Site. He will then describe the chosen basement wall system and

discuss the cooperative effort that was developed between the owner, designers, contractors and material supplier. He will then describe in detail the design of the temporary shoring system

including specific site constraints and requirements. Followed by the sequencing effort to turn the temporary shoring system into a permanent basement wall. MMCE prepared design plans for excavation shoring that consisted of a 25-foot high sheetpile

wall with tieback supports and knee braces. The tieback design considered the proximity of the surrounding structures including the Buffalo Rapid Transit Tunnel under Main Street, the

planned new Women and Children’s Hospital east of the office building and the fact that contaminated soils had to be removed during the excavation process.

 


Biography

Andrew J. Nichols, P.E. – McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, P.C. Andrew received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Masters of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical focus from the University at Buffalo. He is a licensed professional engineer in New York and has 18 years of consulting engineering experience with other Engineering Firms and McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, P.C. Andrew has professional experience on numerous projects involving civil, structural and geotechnical engineering in the U.S. In particular his experience has focused on structural evaluations of various foundation elements and geotechnical evaluations for foundations, earth slopes and landfill embankments.


ASCE and BAPG will both be responsible for their own organizations registrations.
