May 2008 Meeting Abstract

"The Paleoclimate Perspective on Arctic Warming"

The Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists (BAPG) invites you to its monthly dinner meeting to be held at Ripa's Restaurant, in Lancaster, NY, on Wednesday, May 21st, 2008. The topic of the presentation is "Discovery of an Unconventional Natural Gas Reservoir" as presented by Dr. Gary Lash of the Geosciences Department of SUNY at Fredonia.

From Dr. Lash: "I will be talking about the Marcellus Shale, which has been all over the energy related news. Specifically, I will be addressing the best way to play the Marcellus Shale; to do this, we need to spend time talking about fracturing (jointing) of this organic-rich unit – i.e., timing and depth of fracturing as well as the mechanism of jointing. The goal is to stimulate pre-existing fractures in these rocks."

Dr. Lash received his Ph.D. in geology from Lehigh University in 1980. After spending a year with the Virginia Geological Survey, he came to Fredonia State where he have been since 1981. He have worked in the Central Appalachian fold and thrust belt as well as Newfoundland looking at Ordovician sandstones. His work in the Devonian shale succession started nine years ago.
