November 2006 Meeting Abstract

"Faults in the Norther Appalachian Basin: Recognition and Implications"

The Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists (BAPG) is pleased to announce that its monthly dinner meeting will be held at Millennium Airport Hotel located at 2040 Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga on November 15th, 2006. The topic of the dinner presentation and discussion will be "Faults in the Norther Appalachian Basin: Recognition and Implications" will be presented by Dr. Robert D. Jacobi, Professor, University at Buffalo.

The Appalachian Basin in New York State was generally regarded as structurally simple, with only a few recognized fault systems. In the past 10 years, integration of 11 geological, geochemical and geophysical techniques allowed recognition and mapping of literally 100s of faults, many of which have been episodically reactivated. These fault systems provided pathways for fluid circulation, leading to the Trenton Black River play. The interplay between fault block motion and eustatic sea level change influenced the deposition of sands, including the Bradford sands and correlatives. Similarly, the black shale and salt basins were also fault influenced. This model is applicable to the Appalachian Basin farther south in Pennsylvania. The model also provides a framework for better understanding sporadic seismicity in the Appalachian Basin of NYS.

Please plan on attending the November meeting!
